Sixteen

Emma

I woke to a hand over my mouth.

“Shhh,” Teran said softly in my ear. “Someone comes.”

Bolting upright, I carefully lifted my pack and slipped it onto my back. My pulse was a rapid throb in my throat, and my belly rolled.

I shouldn’t have slept. If I’d been awake, I would’ve heard them myself.

Teran nudged his head toward the other opening where Merrill waited. His beady gaze remained fixed on the entrance, and his lips peeled back, revealing sabre cat teeth.

I crawled to the exit with Teran right behind me, and we hurried down the tiny tunnel while shuffling sounds grew louder.

So close. If we hadn’t wakened…

Hitting the end of the tunnel, I paused. Merrill bolted out and ran to the right, telling me it was unlikely something predatory waited in that direction. But I’d be stupid to trust my future to a tiny cat-like creature, as much as I adored him. Crawling from the opening, I moved to the side and waited for Teran to emerge.

He leaped to his feet and swept me up, hurrying me down the path to the left.

“Merrill,” I softly grunted. “He went the other way.”

“This is the way to our destination.”

“You’re sure?”

“The kee-tee is not going there. We are.”

Valid point, but I looked over my shoulder as I ran, hoping my little friend would catch up.

We rounded a bend in the snaky trail and cartwheeled, staring down a steep embankment leading to a raging river.

A glance to the left and right showed only rocky terrain, a challenge to transverse on a day when you had time.

“Which way?” I asked. I caught movement over my shoulder and found Merrill waiting on the trail, his lips peeled back in a snarl. Seeing me looking, he pivoted and bolted back the way we came.

Teran took my hand and we raced back down the trail, but muffled voices ahead made us freeze. He growled and spun, dragging me with him. His wings unfurled.

“Merrill,” I called in a low voice. I couldn’t leave him behind.

We hit the open area and as Teran swept me up, Merrill dashed toward us from the right. A leap, and he landed in my arms. Teran took flight, soaring off the cliff and spiraled down, down.

Eeeeeek! I squeezed my eyes shut. I didn’t mind heights but damn. A freefall off the cliff followed by a quick leveling out only a few feet above a raging river just about gave me a heart attack.

Even Merrill trembled. I patted his head but my hand shook.

Teran’s wings flapped furiously as he flew upriver.

“We’re going in the right direction?” I asked. My brain was scrambled; I couldn’t tell.

“Yes.” He darted a look over his shoulder and when his arms tightened around me, I wasn’t sure I wanted to know.

Shouts rang out.

“How many winged?” I asked.

“All of them.”

Damn. “Are we dealing with the five from before?”

“Unless others have joined them, yes.”

“I believe in live and let live but right now, I wish I’d done something to keep them off our tail permanently.
